Mosquito Related Diseases - What You Must Know

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Aside from being pesky creatures (I just got bit on the forehead) mosquitoes tend to carry various diseases that are unwelcome at best. Most of use are familiar with West Nile Virus, the most recently reported mosquito carrying disease. There are numerous other diseases that mosquitoes carry however, which we’ll cover in greater detail below.

Dengue Fever
Dengue fever actually comes from four different viruses. Typically Aedes mosquitos carry this form of infection. With Dengue fever, a vicious cycle occurs when a mosquito bites an infected person, then becomes infected, and bites more people. Dengue fever is typically characterized by symptoms like severe headaches, fever, nausea and vomiting and pains in the joints or bones. Some may mistake Dengue fever for a bad case of the flu. The treatment similarly is lots of rest and fluids. In some cases your doctor may prescribe drugs to bring your fever down. Usually patients recover within two weeks.

Malaria
Malaria is a well known mosquito born illness. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Patients with malaria may also mistake their symptoms for flu symptoms. Unfortunately if not treated, malaria can lead to other illnesses including anemia and jaundice. Once bitten it may take several weeks before a patient begins exhibiting symptoms, thus this is one mosquito born illness that is difficult to diagnose. Malaria is most often associated with traveling to foreign countries with large populations of Aedes mosquitoes. Fortunately there are many treatment choices for patients with malaria. There are also preventive treatments a patient can take. These include:

  • Chloroquine - Travelers should consider taking this pill starting two weeks prior to travel and for four weeks after travel if going to malaria infested areas.
  • Doxycycline - This treatment starts two days before departure and may be continued for up to 4 weeks upon return home.

Unfortunately malaria is a very severe and insidious disease. Even after recovering some patients may find their symptoms return several months or years after treatment.

Viral Encephalitis
Viral encephalitis is a serious disease that results in brain inflammation. There are multiple causes, though many people with this disease get it from an insect bite (usually a mosquito bite). Fortunately most patients that contract viral encephalitis recover fine, but recovery often takes an extended period of time. There is some risk of permanent injury from the disease as well. In rare circumstances viral encephalitis can cause death.

West Nile encephalitis is just one form of viral encephalitis. It is more common in areas like the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus has recently invaded the shores of the United States. The symptoms are also flu-like and may include muscle and joint aches and pains, headaches, rashes and fevers. At this time there is no cure for West Nile disease, though patients usually recover in one to several weeks. Some people are not affected as badly as others. West Nile is particularly risky for those with compromised immune symptoms. Severe reactions to the disease may include paralysis and encephalitis.

Protecting Yourself From Mosquito Born Diseases
While most of this information sounds pretty terrible (that’s because it is) the good news is you can largely protect yourself from mosquito bites. While you may not be able to prevent every bite, you can reduce the risk for contracting a mosquito born illness.

Common preventive measures include:

  • Using chemical repellants or insecticides to keep mosquitoes in your yard at bay.
  • Use of a mosquito repellant containing DEET. There are family formulas that contain less DEET that are safe to use on young children.
  • Wearing long pants and sleeves when out in mosquito infested areas. Mosquitoes are also more common at dusk, thus it is a good idea to wear long sleeved items and spray your clothes when out in this environment.
  • Use of citronella candles and other natural insect repellants.
  • Keep grass trimmed short to deter mosquitoes.
  • Avoid allowing any water to stand for more than a day in your yard or around your house, as mosquitoes tend to breed in standing water.

You’ll probably find a combination of these strategies works best to keep mosquitoes from harming you and your family.

Herb Blends and How To Use Them

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Sometimes you just get tired of using the same old recipe that tastes the same time after time. But we are all so busy we are looking for easy ways to spice up are repertoire. One way that many cooks forget is to use blends of herbs to add subtle flavor distinctions. The French have been doing this forever.

The French never use just one herb in there dishes but rather a blend of herbs that they call a “bouquets garni”. Don’t be put off by that fancy name, it simply means a bouquet of herbs. The blend of herbs adds subtle but distinct flavors to every dish you prepare. The trick is to get the right blend for so no one herb dominates the dish. You want the flavors to be delicate.

With just a few herb bouquets you can change the taste of a recipe instantly. Now, old recipes have added spark and will get you plenty of “This is Greats”. Your aim here is to create a complex flavor that is balanced making each guest want to instantly take another bite. Of course there is different garni for each recipe. You want to achieve the right herbs and spices that compliment each other. You want to use the right relationship between quantities of each herb you are using.

For meat based casseroles, stews, stocks and soup, the old tried and true garni of parsley, thyme and bay leaf still apply. But go one step further and add a twist of citrus (lime, lemon, or orange) for a little zip. The formula for this garni is 3 sprigs of parsley, 1 sprig of thyme and 1 bay leaf. Get a piece of cooking string and tie the bundle together. Viola, just add the bundle to your dish and remove it before serving. Please use fresh herbs, they’re so much better. If you have to use dried, sprinkle the herbs into a patch of cheesecloth and tie the cloth together with the string. .Fine Herbes and Herbes de Provence are to other bouquets that the French use in their cooking.

You can buy these at the grocery store or a gourmet shop but why not make your own. Finely chop fresh oregano, thyme, marjoram, savory, and marjoram for Herbes de Provence. Add one tablespoon of each to your dish. This combination can also be used in salads, meat dishes and vegetables.

The English version of Herbes de Provence is sage, rosemary, marjoram, Italian parsley chives, tarragon and thyme. Mix them all together and use on lamb, pork or in stuffing.

For Fine Herbes, mix together chopped parsley, tarragon, chives and chervil. Experiment with the quantities. Be adventurous! Keep careful notes when you are experimenting so that you can duplicate the successes and toss the disasters. Remember that creating beautiful tasty dishes is a more of a craft that an art.

You will need to identify the flavor and strength of each herb so that you can group them into either mild or robust. Examples of mild herbs are basil, bay leaf, chervil dill, and marjoram. These herbs combine well with most other herbs and their flavors become milder during the cooking process. With mild herbs you can use larger amounts and with more variation. They can also be used in salads and other dishes where the leaves are not cooked or briefly cooked.

Your robust herbs stand up to cooking. Often, they are used for braised or roasted meat or domestic fowl, soups, stews and even grilled foods. You will have work on the recipe since sometime the herbs alter subtly during the cooking process. They will either become more muted or in some cases intensify. They can always be combined with the mild herbs. Robust herbs include sorrel, rosemary, garlic, oregano, sage, tarragon and thyme.

Another cool easy to use fresh herbs is to flavor oil or vinegar with a blend of either mild or robust herbs. You will need pretty glass jars (preferable dark) and a tight seal. Simply put your combination of herbs in the jar, add the oil or vinegar, seal and let it sit for several weeks. Oils should be stored in the refrigerator. The herbs will add a subtle flavor to the liquid and will be delicious in a variety of ways.

You can make really healthy tinctures with fresh herbs. But I would urge you to master the cooking with herbs before you branch out to other areas. By know exactly how each herb flavors each dish you will instinctually know what to use in tinctures.

Again be adventurous, mix and match, keep trying new things and keep notes so your successes can be repeated. After you have mastered cooking with herbs, who knows? Maybe you will start an herb garden so you will always have fresh delicious herbs on hand.

Here’s to Good Cooking!

Tropical Hurricane Zeta and the Hurricane Season that Would Not Die

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Oh no! Here we go again. Just when we thought it was safe to start rebuilding it seems to be starting all over again as Mother Nature Presents; Hurricane Zeta, A New Years Hurricane for All Seasons. Can you believe we now have Tropical Storm Zeta brewing out in the Atlantic Ocean? Is this the Hurricane Season that would not die, will it ever end? Are we entering a new Climate Change where Hurricanes will be all year around? Can humans live in that level of fear? If so there are going to be some serious issues? For instance what about Florida Real Estate prices? And can the giant sand bar we call Florida really exist over the years if we keep watching the beaches erode away?

Well things are not that dire yet, but one has to wonder if the Super Storm scenarios that the science fiction writers and the Global Warming Alarmists are discussing are going to become our reality? After this last 2005 Horrific Tropical Hurricane Season with the most named Tropical Storms, most Hurricanes, longest season and three of the most powerful Category Five Plus Hurricane one can only wonder what 2006 will bring us. Can you believe we have a Tropical Storm the size of Zeta this late in the year or early in the year depending on how you look at it. Is Mother Nature just screwing with us to remind us that she is the boss and we only rent the surface of the planet while we are here? Will she show us much more of this in 2006?

Work at Home Mom Summer Survival Guide

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Working at home during the summer creates challenges for the WAHM. As the summer begins, there’s a lot to keep the kids entertained and give Mom time to work on her business. As the summer progresses, however, choruses of ‘Mom I’m bored’ ring out, causing otherwise mild mannered Moms to throw up their hands in complete desperation; right before they start planning an escape route.

Moms can’t escape for too long however, and kids have an uncanny knack of finding the hiding spot anyway. So what can you do to keep your business in tact during the summer months when the cherubs are effectively running the show?

How flexible are you? No, I don’t mean can you play a mean game of Twister while baking a pan of blueberry muffins, but rather, how willing or able are you to adjust your normal work at home day to meet the ever changing demands of tireless children?

Leslie Spencer, founder of Home Based Working Mom, suggests using a laptop with a wireless internet connection. You’ll be a mobile mom, able to take your work anywhere your kids go.

Planning and preparation will make your life less stressful. Before summer vacation begins, do some research to find local youth programs being offered and enroll your kids. Make lists of ‘things to do’ and have ready all of the needed supplies so your school age kids can entertain themselves.

Be realistic. Come to terms with the fact that you may not be as productive during the summer, and schedule your work to make the best use of your time.

Summer challenges for WAHMs do not have to cripple your business. Find local groups and activities for your kids to participate in and remember, time with your kids will pass all too soon, and summer vacation is just one part of WAHM life.

Dare to Succeed and You Will

“I believe life is constantly testing us for our level of commitment,
and life’s greatest rewards are reserved for those who demonstrate
a never-ending commitment to act until they achieve.

This level of resolve can move mountains, but it must be constant and consistent.

As simplistic as this may sound, it is still the common denominator
separating those who live their dreams from those who live in regret”
Anthony Robbins

There is another common denominator which separates successful individuals and successful businesses, large or small, from the also-rans - creating and communicating their VISION of what and where they wish to be.

Those who know me will verify that I am certainly not talking about some meaningless statement that people may think looks good in brochures and annual reports but cannot be communicated effectively to those that matter i.e. those that need to make it happen.

In simple terms, a carefully worded and clearly communicated vision…

  • gives us the clarity of Purpose
  • provides the Direction we need
  • facilitates the planning process (without which we will definitely fail)
  • allows us to kick the plan into action - REAL action
  • promotes the passion and desire to succeed
  • drives us, giving us the persistence we need to succeed
  • Now let’s put this into the context of you, me, anyone

The daft thing is, apart from a serious and well written few, most of these articles try to suggest that this is all unique to doing business on the internet.

Sorry, but this is a lot of brown stuff!

Think of your favourite sports star, athlete, business person, mentor. What’s the one thing they have in common?

A Sustained Will to Be Successful.

More importantly, think of someone you know or perhaps have read about that battled with a serious illness and won…

This following short poem says succinctly what it would take me pages to explain…

“If you think you’re beaten, you are,

if you think you dare not, you don’t.

If you like to win, but you think you can’t,

it is almost certain you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,

for out in the world we find,

success begins with a fellows will -

it’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are,

you’ve got to think high to rise,

you’ve got to be sure of yourself

before you can ever win a prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster person,

but sooner or later the person who wins is the person

No, it’s not always easy (like me, you probably know that from your own experiences). However, that does not stop it from being true.

Car Loans for People with Bad Credit - How to Qualify for a Bad Credit Auto Loan

    Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

With most lenders, having bad credit or a past bankruptcy is not a
problem. Thus, you can obtain an automobile loan with a low credit score.
There are certain advantages to having good credit. These individuals
generally pay a few percentage points less, which equals a lesser monthly
payment. However, qualifying for a car with bad credit is easy. Here
are a few tips to help you get approved.

Requirements for Getting an Auto Loan with Bad Credit

To get approved for a bad credit auto loan, applicants must meet
certain requirements. For starters, car loans are not offered to minors.
Therefore, applicants under the age of 18 must have a parent or other adult
co-sign for the loan. Moreover, applicants must be employed and have a
    driver’s license.

Auto loans are the easiest types of loans to obtain because they are
secured. With this said, auto loans are perfect for those hoping to build
a solid credit history, and individuals hoping to raise their credit
    score.

    Skip Dealership Financing

Securing financing through the car dealership seems simple and
convenient. Nonetheless, keep in mind that dealerships will make a small profit
off of your financing package. To do so, they must increase the
    interest rate a few points.

If the lender approved you for a 10 percent interest rate, the
dealership may charge 11 or 12 percent. To avoid paying the extra fees, look
for private financing. Private financing could come from a bank, credit
union, etc. If possible, get pre-approved before visiting dealerships.

    Check Credit Report for Errors

Having bad credit does not always mean getting hit with the highest
interest rate. Prior to applying for an auto loan, attempt to make some
credit improvements and correct errors. For a few months leading up to
financing a new or used car, pay all bills on time. This could make the
difference in getting a loan with 12 percent interest and 9 percent
    interest.

    Explore Different Types of Lenders

Common lenders used for an auto loan include banks and credit unions.
However, there are lenders that offer bad credit auto loans at
reasonable rates. Sub prime lenders are becoming increasingly popular. They
offer online applications and quick pre-approvals. Moreover, various
lenders will provide a no-obligation auto loan quote. This way, you can
review their offer before making a decision.

    Student Loan Refinance

    Monday, June 2nd, 2008

There are basically two types of Student Loans: Federal Student Loans and private loans. Federal loans are based on the financial need of the applicant [student] and are backed by the US government. They can be refinanced at far lower interest rates than private loans. Private loans are personal consumer loans.

Just as in other refinances, the main aim of Student Loan Refinancing is to reduce monthly payments to the lender. If the student has borrowed more than one loan, as in other types of refinance, the easiest way to accomplish this is to consolidate the loans [known as `debt consolidation']. But before debt consolidation, the student has to see that federal and private loans are not combined. If they are combined, the interest on the combined principal may turn out to be more than the total interest of the accrued loans considered separately. Consolidating federal loans and private loans separately is most economical. Student Loan consolidators can be consulted to work on this important aspect.

Private loans are based on the credit history of the student or the student’s parents or guardians. Parents or guardians are the co-signers [also known as `co-endorsers'] in the Refinance agreement and assume equal responsibility for repayment of the loan, though they are not the beneficiaries.

Students with good credit histories stand a better chance than others. Here too, the students and the co-signers should see that their credit histories are in good shape. It is best to review their credit reports, and fix any problems. They should also compare interest rates from different lenders, so that they get the best deal.

Most Student Loans allow monthly repayments that stretch over 12-30 years, usually, and come due after the student graduates from the program or the course for which the loan was sought. The longer the period of repayment, more expensive it turns out to be. Hence, it is very important to speed the loan repayment as much as possible. There are numerous instances where students have saved thousands of dollars in interest.

Refinance provides detailed information about refinance, bad credit refinance, car refinance, loan refinance and more. Refinance is the sister site of Fixed Rate Home Equity Loans.

6 Easy Steps to Separating Your Personal Life from Your Business

    Monday, June 2nd, 2008

If you work from home, chances are you already know that you’re really pulling “double duty”. You probably work on your business while doing the laundry, corralling the kids, or fixing dinner… and let’s not forget all the phone calls from family and friends expecting you to run errands or just “go out” for an afternoon of fun.

One of the hardest parts of running a home business is separating your work from your family and social life. Here are six proven ways to keep your home life running smoothly while keeping your business on track.

    1. First, create a work schedule and stick with it. It may be tempting to answer personal calls during the day or take business calls after-hours, but doing this actually shows that you’re expendable - not dependable - and people will take for granted that you’ll “always be there” for any little things that come up. Even though family comes first, stay true to your business hours and resist the urge to chat with friends or pick up groceries during working hours.

    2. Your friends may consider “working from home” an invitation to chat during the day or just go out for coffee or shopping for an afternoon. Make it clear that your business hours are just that - for business. Leave personal calls for after-hours, and you’ll find that your friends will gradually accept your schedule without feeling slighted.

    3. Just because you have to set up a work schedule, doesn’t mean that you have to keep the same hours as everyone else. One of the benefits of working for yourself is setting your own hours to fit your most productive times. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, you’ll find that you’ll get much more done when you’re attuned to your body’s own natural rhythms. Some people work in the morning, take a break in the afternoon when the kids are home from school, and work again in the evening. Schedule your work time when you feel the most productive and you’ll find that things get done easier, faster and better than when you were dragging along during those same rigid work hours that everyone else has.

    4. If getting after-hours business calls or work day personal calls is a problem, it helps to have a separate business phone line, or at least an answering machine or voice mail, to take the incoming calls. This also gives your business a more professional appearance to clients than if you and your family make and receive calls from the same phone line.

    5. If at all possible, try to separate your “home office” from the rest of your home. If you don’t have the luxury of a separate room, a room partition or screen can be just as helpful. This also serves as a visual cue to family that you’re working and shouldn’t be bothered.

    6. Dress and act professionally while working. Some people find it helpful to dress in casual business attire during their working hours. This reinforces that just because you’re working from home doesn’t make you any less of a professional. Answer the phone with your name, or business name, and keep your children off the phone during business hours. Also, spend money investing in the tools you need to do your job right. A cell phone, fax machine or even a budget computer can help turn your home office into a true workspace.

If you follow all of these tips and stick with them, chances are you’ll find a routine that not only makes you feel productive and active in your business, but also projects the message that you mean business - literally!

Stress Management: Fear Of Making Mistakes

    Monday, June 2nd, 2008

What is the definition of the word “mistake”?

Well many think it’s doing something that is expected of them but incorrectly so.

I would like to suggest however that a more fundamental definition might be; “Doing something that is not right for you”.

Doesn’t that resonate with you at some deep level? At the same time it might also make you feel uncomfortable because you might start to realize that perhaps your entire life starts to feel like a mistake.

What do I mean by this? Well if you look at how you choose to live your life, how happy or stressed you are generally speaking from day to day then I think you will understand what I’m getting at.

If not let me make it clearer. If you are doing what is right for you then it should make you feel happy, calm, at peace, fulfilled, and satisfied should it not?

Is this how you feel most of the time? Not likely correct?

So you see by my definition mistakes abound in your life, don’t they? Now I’m not trying to make your life more difficult than it already is. In fact I’m actually trying to make you more conscious of the consequences of the choices you make for yourself in every moment.

I hope you can see that, even if at first it may make you feel a bit irritated.

So if you have been making “mistakes” by my definition, why is that? Well probably because somewhere in your life you became conditioned into accepting certain beliefs about what was right for you that were false. In other words you allowed yourself to become “programmed” much like how a computer gets programmed.

A computer is told what to do and does it without question, whether it likes it or not. Of course a computer can’t feel anything so it doesn’t matter how unpleasant a task it is given.

But you are not a computer or robot are you? So why are you choosing to behave like one?

Well likely because much of the programming that runs your life is so deeply buried in your unconscious mind and body that you can’t even see that it is there.

The only measure that you have to know that it is however is the level of unhappiness or stress you feel in your life. This is the measure that tells you whether you are going where “you” want to or not.

That’s what makes you different from a computer or a robot. If you want to reclaim you power and your human-ness and stop all of these pre-programmed automatic behaviors that are killing you please visit the web link below where I have a special audio message waiting for you.

10 Fun Ways To Become More Active - Every Day

    Monday, June 2nd, 2008

You know you should be getting some sort of exercise, you know of all the health benefits that come with a more active lifestyle. You’ve tried the whole Gym thing, but it just wasn’t for you. The temptation to just sit in front of the TV, to curl up with a good book, or to spend a little extra time at your computer is just too big. Who wants to head to the gym right now anyway?

There are many other options to get more active that don’t include jogging, weight lifting or other “traditional” ways to work out. Here are a few ideas to get you moving

    1) Chase your Kids around the Yard
You’d be surprised at how much of a work out you’ll get playing catch with your kids. Time will fly while you are having fun and your children will enjoy the extra time with you. Just get out there and play.

    2) Turn up the Music and Dance around the Living Room
While you’re dusting, putting up dishes, straightening up the kids’ rooms, or after you’ve been sitting around for too long, just play some of your favorite upbeat music and dance around in the house. Not only will you get your heart rate up, but you’ll also have more fun doing some of those chores.

    3) Plant some Flowers
When the weather is nice, just get out there and plant some flowers. Or you could start a little vegetable garden, trim some hedges, cut the grass, or plant a tree. You get the idea. Just get out there, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and play in the dirt. Yes, this actually counts as exercise in our book.

    4) Go for a Walk with a Friend
Take a walk and invite a friend to come along. I’ve had some of the best conversations while on a walk. Getting to chat with a friend makes the time fly by and before you know it you’ve been walking for 30 minutes.

    5) Listen to some Music or an Audio Book while You Walk
Again, keeping your mind on something else will make the time fly by and you’ll get some extra fun out of your walk. You may even want to consider getting an MP3 Player. You can easily add what you want to listen to and go for your walk.

    6) Sign up for a Yoga or Pilates Class
Consider starting a yoga or Pilates class. Both of these workouts are pretty low impact and won’t leave you sweaty and sore (mostly). You may also enjoy meeting some new people in the class.

    7) Take some Dance Lessons with your Partner
Ok, here is the tough part: Convince your partner to take some dance lessons. Dancing will give you quite the workout and it’s just plain fun and of course romantic. Think about all your options here. You can pick from anything from Ball Room Dancing, to Line Dancing, to Latin etc. Pick something that sounds fun to you and go for it. You’ll enjoy the extra one on one time with your partner as well.

    8) Go for a Swim at Your Local YMCA or Aquatic Center
Swimming makes for some great exercise. It is low impact and easy on your joints. Start by swimming a few laps, or play in the pool with your kids.

    9) Go for a Bike Ride
Take the entire family on a bike ride. You can ride through your neighborhood in the evenings or plan a longer trip for the weekend. Pack a picnic for extra fun and start peddling.

    10) Go for a Hike
Look for some hiking trails in your area and go for a hike. This could be a fun activity for you and a friend, or take the entire family along. Start with some easy trails and work yourself up to some longer or steeper trails.

Go ahead, pick one or two of the activities and get moving. I’m sure you’ll come up with plenty of versions of your own. The most important thing is to find something you enjoy, so you’ll stick with it. Get out there and get moving today.
