Your Organisation Skills Can Save Your Life

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

When your life is working well it’s an opportune time to reflect on what you’ve been doing to make it that way. What have you pro-actively done? The same applies for when it spirals out of control - what have been the main contributing factors? Have you ignored the signs and kept going hoping the situation sorts itself out rather than pro-actively making changes?

The most important person in the whole wide world is you. Yet how much time, effort and money do you invest in you? How much time, effort and money do you invest in your health?

I’m asking you these questions because of an incident that affected me last week.

The Accident

My husband is in the building industry and unfortunately he was involved in an industrial accident. He badly cut his right thigh muscles close to his bone on sheetmetal roofing that was sticking out on the site. He was rushed to hospital and was operated on that day, ending up with over 100 plus stitches to his leg.

When I was able to see him that night he looked unbelievably well. You would never have guessed the trauma he had been through a few hours earlier. He was hardly in any pain. He had been given medication but only low doses.

The next day he came home! His leg was heavily bandaged and he had a Velcro splint to keep it straight. He could even walk with the aid of crutches. The only tablets he took were the antibiotics to prevent infection, anti-inflammatories to reduce the swelling and some Panadol.

On day four after the operation he discontinued all medication and has continued to take supplements suggested by our naturopath.

How could he have bounced back so quickly? It’s because he is proactive with his health. He eats healthily (most of the time), exercises regularly and sees our naturopath to ensure his body is functioning internally. In fact, I rang the naturopath to find out what Tama needed to take after his operation to boost his immune system and speed up the healing process.

He doesn’t make excuses about not having time to look after himself…and it’s times like this when he’s thankful he has made the effort. His body can withstand the trauma and has a strong base to restore him back to his normal healthy state.

It will be a few weeks before he is (hopefully) back to normal with full use of his leg. We’ll make sure he is fighting fit with ongoing physiotherapy and he’ll also have a modified fitness program to keep himself in good shape. In fact, I’m also planning to have him go to a health retreat so he can detoxify and remove as much chemical from his body caused from the anaesthetic and pills he was given. This will also help him lose any excess weight he’s likely to put on due to having limited mobility.

Before the accident and after the accident, time, money and effort has to be invested in his health otherwise he will suffer the consequences.

The Manager

A few weeks ago one of my clients felt a tingling in his finger. Being a workaholic he didn’t have time to pay too much attention to it. After all he had meetings booked all day and they were more important than a tingle in his finger. He was about to leave home, then collapsed. Luckily for him, there was another family member in the house and they called the ambulance.

John had suffered a stroke. The warning signs were there all along. He smoked, was 15kg overweight, his diet was poor and exercise was spasmodic. He worked long hours and was under enormous pressure in his role. Much of the pressure was due to John’s organisational skills. He was a poor delegator and had difficulty saying ‘no’. Planning was something he did if he had the time (which meant he never did).

Up until the time of his stroke, John had been making progress through being coached, however he wasn’t making enough consistent effort, particularly around his health. He was a disaster waiting to happen and it did happen. John is 43.

Fortunately John has survived, but what a way to have a ‘wake up ‘ call. He’s definitely paying attention now and making himself the no. 1 priority in his life. He’s had four weeks off and is slowly easing himself back into work with reduced hours and a whole new outlook on the meaning of life. We’ve looked at the options open to him to ensure he stays well. This includes holistic medicine combined with diet, exercise and relaxation.

5 Ways to Get Organised and Stay Alive

Learn how to get yourself organised so you make time for you.

Find a holistic practitioner who offers a range of health tests and can provide proactive on-going treatment and advice. You will require supplements because hardly anyone eats a 100% organic, fully balanced diet and lives in a non-toxic and stress free environment.

If you don’t know where to go feel free to contact me lorraine@office-organiser.com.au I’ll be able to point you in the right direction.

Avoid people and places that do not support what you are trying to achieve, ie. there’s a lady who attends my gym every day to stay in shape and keep her weight under control yet she works in a bakery!

Once you know what to do and how to do it, then do it.

Once you know what to do, how to do it, then do it and if it works…then keep doing it!

The Final Word

Being fit and healthy is not an option. Just because you are standing and breathing doesn’t mean you are well.

You can do our Work/Life Assessment to see what parts of your life are working and where you need to focus more attention. You’ll most likely discover the area of health will be an area where you definitely require a change.

Wellness is about being pro-active with your health and not waiting until you are sick or something happens to you. No matter how busy you are, you surely can’t be too busy to die?

Have a great week

    Christmas Gift Ideas For Him

    Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Every year I try and think of special and unique presents for all my friends and family. Im not one of these people that can just walk around the department store and pick up presents for everyone, I like to put thought into each gift. I like to give something that either some one really needs or is something that is really unique and different.

When I was younger I even went through a stage of making presents for everyone, so that they were one of a kind - Of course now I work full time I don’t have the time I need to dedicate to that, so I have to buy them!

To be honest the female members of my family are easy to buy for - Sentimental photos in a frame or lovely baskets made up with a range of stuff always go down well, It’s the men in my family that I have the problems with!

Ask my dad what he wants and he replies nothing, uncles and cousins are all just as impossible. Last year I tried to search out Christmas gifts for him to find something different.

There were loads of great ideas and I felt really confident that I would be able to shop easily for each of them!

This year I have started early and stumbled across www.christmasideas.org.uk and I honestly think all my prayers are answered. Last year was great but I had to go on about 10 different websites to look up everything I wanted. www.christmasideas.org.uk has everything I could need on one website - So I have book marked it and when it comes to shopping and looking up Christmas gift ideas for him It will be my first port of call!

30 Secrets Of A Good Computer Lesson

    Thursday, July 10th, 2008

    1. The lesson forms part of a unit which forms part of a scheme of work.

    2. There is a good starter activity, one that gets the pupils settled down an in the right frame of mind to do the work you’ve planned for them.

    3. The teacher spends time at the start letting pupils into the secret what the objectives (intended learning outcomes) of the lesson are, ie what is intended to be achieved by the end, and how this lesson fits in with the preceding and following lessons

    4. Pupils are given open ended tasks (as far as possible), or at least not tasks with a glass ceiling. (Even lessons designed to impart a set of skills can still be more interesting than “drill & practice”).

    5. There are plenty of resources for the pupils to use, enabling the teacher to give QUALITY guidance, ie not confined to explaining how to save the document! Such resources will include “how to’ guides and posters, on screen help (which the pupils will have been taught how to use), and each other.

    6. Ample time is allowed for the plenary, thereby allowing it to be somewhat more useful than the POLO model: Print Out and Log Off. The plenary is an ESSENTIAL part of the lesson, used to check what learning has taken place, consolidate learning, and prepare pupils for the next stage. In fact, a lesson might have two or three plenaries rather than just one at the end.

    7. Homework is set at the START of the lesson, enabling the teacher to explain what needs doing, and for the pupils to understand what they need to have achieved by the end of the lesson in order to be able to make a good job of the homework; note that homework is ALWAYS given, regardless of so called homework timetables! (It doesn’t always have to be written down.

    8. Pupils are given plenty of time on the computers, with the teacher helping individuals and small groups.

    9. Work is set at an appropriate standard, taking into account the pupils prior learning and attainment, and what is expected of their age group in terms of national standards.

    10. There is a lot of questioning ” PROBING questioning ” and assessment for learning techniques in evidence.

    11. There is a good range of material to provide for differentiation (higher attainers and children with special educational needs) and personalised learning.

    12. The teacher is aware of individual pupils needs, such as their individual education plans ” and makes use of the assessment and other data she has ” remember: data only becomes information if you DO something with it!

    13. Not all work takes place at the computer.

    14. Pupils come in on time, prepared, and ready to start work.

    15. There is a good buzz in the room pupils are talking about the work, not last night’s TV programs.

    16. Pupils organise themselves and, if working in groups, work collaboratively rather than competitively at least with other members of their own group!

    17. Pupils don’t keep asking the time, unless they are worried about not being able to complete the work (see below though) and don’t notice the time going by.

    18. Pupils don’t understand the concept of finishing the work in the sense of having time left over to check email, play Solitaire etc.

    19. Pupils, even normally poorly behaved ones, ask to be allowed to stay on, come back at lunchtime or come back early in the morning.

    20. Pupils respect the equipment and the room. For example, they do not leave discarded print outs on the floor.

    21. Pupils are happy and confident enough to try out things you haven’t shown them: they ask help from each other or look at the posters and manuals that are available for them.

    22. If you interrupt their work in order to announce or explain something, someone asks you to hurry up so that they can get back to their work.

    23. Pupils do a greater amount work, say for homework, than you have asked them to. For example, instead of conducting a survey with 10 people they decide to ask 20.

    24. Pupils do a wider range of work than you have asked them to. For example, instead of just writing about what the hospital of the future will be like, they canvass the views of others and carry out some research about current developments.

    25. Pupils want to show off to you little tricks they have discovered, such as keyboard shortcuts.

    26. Pupils talk to their friends about the lesson.

    27. Pupils discuss with their friends the possibility of taking a particular ICT course in 3 years time.

    28. Pupils not only want to assist at open evenings/days, but are able to look after and even create an ICT presentation on your behalf.

    29. Pupils are able to help other (younger or older) pupils with confidence and enthusiasm.

    30. Pupils ask you questions that you are unable to answer.

How to Pick Your Next Camping Tent

    Thursday, July 10th, 2008

A good camping tent should keep you dry, comfortable, and provide protection.

Which camping tent… Dome, family, 4-season, backpacking or cabin is right for you? They don’t repel rain, cold, snow, or biting bugs equally.

Camping tents are an important outdoor gear investment. This article will give you the information you need to make an informed decision about what kind is best for you.

First determine what type of camping you’ll be doing? Do you only go out in the summer or are you into 4-season camping? Make sure to prepare yourself for the worst possible type of weather you’ll encounter. Waking up to a foot of snow inside your summer camping tent because of a late fall blizzard isn’t much fun. ;-)

After determining what seasons you’ll need your tent for, estimate how many people you will usually camp with…

    Sizing It Up

Camping tents are rated by the number of people they can accommodate. But these ratings are like getting twenty circus clowns into a Volkswagon Beetle…goofy. :-) When they say it’s a 4-person tent, they mean 4 people and nothing else, no hiking gear, no room for boots, just 4 people that hopefully know each other pretty well. Seriously, if you’re looking for backpacking tents or hiking tents and weight is a big concern, then get cozy and use the rating system, but otherwise I’d think bigger.

Consider going 1-2 sizes bigger than what you need for a smaller camping tent. Better yet divide the “person rating” by 2 so you’ll have a decent amount of room if you have to stay inside due to nasty weather. If you thought cabin fever was bad wait until you’re stuck in a downpour with 5 other people in a small tent for a few days.

My 4 man tent with 2 vestibules is perfect for 2 people and plenty of gear. Dry equipment is a good thing. This is still true with kids because the smaller they are the more room they take up with “kid stuff”. Something else to keep in mind is that more room makes extended trips easier.

Consider the length and width of the camping tents you’re looking at. If you’re 6 feet tall you’ll want at least 7 feet to stretch out length-wise and 2-3 feet of width depending on how much you move in your sleep.

Another thing to consider is to make sure you have enough space for an inflatable air mattress. While it’s not mandatory I’ll have to say it makes camping much more comfortable than lying on a cold pad. When I wake up I feel 300% better than when I slept on a pad on the floor getting stiff and cold. No it’s not a king-size pillow-top, but hey this is camping. ;-)

Since we’re on the subject of size, make sure that you’ll have enough height to kneel, partially-stand, or…

The Art of Concentrating by Means of Practical Psychic Exercises (Part 5)

    Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

    Exercise 11

By Psychic - Concentration You Can Control Your Temper. If you are one of
those that flare up at the slightest “provocation” and never try
to control yourself, just think this over a minute. Does it do
you any good? Do you gain anything by it? Doesn’t it put you out
of poise for some time? Don’t you know that this grows on you and
will eventually make you despised by all that have any dealings
with you? Everyone makes mistakes and, instead of becoming angry
at their perpetrators, just say to them, “Be more careful next
time.” This thought will be impressed on them and they will be
more careful. But, if you continually complain about their making
a mistake, the thought of a mistake is impressed on them and they
will be more likely to make mistakes in the future. All lack of
self-control can be conquered if you will but learn to
    concentrate.

Many of you that read this may think you are not guilty of either
of these faults, but if you will carefully watch yourself you
will probably find that you are, and, if so, you will be greatly
helped by repeating this affirmation each morning:

“I am going to try today not to make a useless gesture or to
worry over trifles, or become nervous or irritable. I intend to
be calm, and, no difference what may be the circumstances, I will
control myself. Henceforth I resolve to be free from all signs
    that show lack of self-control.”

At night quickly review your actions during the day and see how
fully you realized your aim. At first you will, of course, have
to plead guilty of violation a few times, but keep on, and you
will soon find that you can live up to your ideal. After you have
once gained self-control, however, don’t relinquish it. For some
time it will still be necessary to repeat the affirmation in the
morning and square your conduct with it in the evening. Keep up
the good work until, at last, the habit of self-control is so
firmly fixed that you could not break it even though you tried.

I have had many persons tell me that this affirmation and daily
review made a wonderful difference in their lives. You, too, will
notice the difference if you live up to these instructions.

    Exercise 12.

Practice Talking Before a Glass. Make two marks on your mirror on
a level with your eyes, and think of them as two human eyes
looking into yours. Your eyes will probably blink a little at
first. Do not move your head, but stand erect. Concentrate all
your thoughts on keeping your head perfectly still. Do not let
another thought come into your mind. Then, still keeping the
head, eyes and body still, think that you look like a reliable
man or woman should; like a person that anyone would have
confidence in. Do not let your appearance be such as to justify
the remark, “I don’t like his appearance. I don’t believe he can
    be trusted.”

While standing before the mirror practice deep breathing. See
that there is plenty of fresh air in the room, and that you are
literally feasting on it. You will find that, as it permeates
every cell, your timidity will disappear. It has been replaced by
a sense of peace and power.

The one that stands up like a man and has control over the
muscles of his face and eyes always commands attention. In his
conversation, he can better impress those with whom he comes in
contact. He acquires a feeling of calmness and strength that
causes opposition to melt away before it.

Three minutes a day is long enough for the practice of this
    exercise.

Look at the clock before you commence the exercise, and if you
find you can prolong the exercise for more than five minutes do
so. The next day sit in a chair and, without looking at the
picture, concentrate on it and see if you cannot think of
additional details concerning it. The chances are you will be
able to think of many more. It might be well for you to write
down all you thought of the first day, and then add to the list
each new discovery. You will find that this is a very excellent
    exercise in Psychic - Concentration.

    Exercise 13

The Control of Sensations. Think how you would feel if you were
cool; then how you would feel if you were cold; again, how you
would feel if it were freezing. In this state you would be
    shivering all over. Now think of just the opposite conditions;
construct such a vivid image of heat that you are able to
experience the sensation of heat even in the coldest atmosphere.
It is possible to train your imagination until you do this, and
it can then be turned to practical account in making undesirable
    conditions bearable.

You can think of many very good exercises like this. For
instance, if you feel yourself getting hungry or thirsty and for
any reason you do not wish to eat, do not think of how hungry or
thirsty you are, but just visualize yourself as finishing a
hearty meal. Again, when you experience pain, do not increase it
by thinking about it, but do something to divert your attention,
and the pain will seem to decrease. If you will start practicing
along this line systematically you will soon gain a wonderful
control over the things that affect your physical comfort.

    Exercise 14

The Eastern Way of Concentrating. Sit in a chair with a high back
in upright position. Press one finger against the right nostril.
Now take a long, deep breath, drawing the breath in gently as you
count ten; then expel the breath through the right nostril as you
count ten. Repeat this exercise with the opposite nostril. This
exercise should be done at least twenty times at each sitting.

    Exercise 15

Controlling Desires. Desire, which is one of the hardest forces
to control, will furnish you with excellent exercises in
Psychic - Concentration. It seems natural to want to tell others what you
know; but, by learning to control these desires, you can
wonderfully strengthen your powers of Psychic - Concentration. Remember,
you have all you can do to attend to your own business. Do not
waste your time in thinking of others or in gossiping about them.

If, from your own observation, you learn something about another
person that is detrimental, keep it to yourself. Your opinion may
afterwards turn out to be wrong anyway, but whether right or
wrong, you have strengthened your will by controlling your desire
    to communicate your views.

If you hear good news resist the desire to tell it to the first
person you meet and you will be benefited thereby. It will
require the Psychic - Concentration of all your powers of resistance to
prohibit the desire to tell. After you feel that you have
complete control over your desires you can then tell your news.
But you must be able to suppress the desire to communicate the
news until you are fully ready to tell it. Persons that do not
possess this power of control over desires are apt to tell things
that they should not, thereby often involving both themselves and
    others in needless trouble.

If you are in the habit of getting excited when you hear
unpleasant news, just control yourself and receive it without any
exclamation of surprise. Say to yourself, “Nothing is going to
cause me to lose my self-control. You will find from experience
that this self-control will be worth much to you in business. You
will be looked upon as a cool-headed business man, and this in
time becomes a valuable business asset. Of course, circumstances
alter cases. At times it is necessary to become enthused. But be
ever on the lookout for opportunities for the practice of
self-control. “He that ruleth his spirit is greater than he that
    ruleth a city.”

    Holographic Cliff Climbing Assistant

    Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

For those learning to be rock climbers, they know how tough it is and how challenging it can be. You have to be in excellent shape and much has to be learned the hard way through trial and error. There are many good books on rock climbing, but reading it in a book is a lot different than doing it.

Many rock climbers buy instructional videos. These seem to work better than the books and also make a nice supplement to the workbooks, if one chooses to use both. Once the potential rock climber becomes proficient in the book knowledge generally he or she will go out and get some rock climbing experience with a real rock climber.

The rock-climbing instructor of course will talk them through occasionally the student rock climber will get nervous and upset or psychologically distraught. Obviously this situation can become dangerous and it therefore takes a really re-assuring instructor to keep everything under control, as fear of falling is highly an innate characteristic of human beings.

I propose using the latest cutting edge Holographic Technologies in 3D and 4D full motion projection to assist in this. The student will have a small holographic projection device which has a pre-recorded expert rock climber on the exact same training rock climbing up and the student can rewind it play it over and over again as they match their movements against the holographic image and conquer their fears. Knight Rider (Season 2) DVD Review

    Monday, July 7th, 2008

One of the more intriguing television shows of the early-1980s, Knight Rider (and K.I.T.T. in particular) captured the imagination of children everywhere while, at the same time, entertaining adults with its effective utilization of a traditional TV action genre. Knight Rider tells the story of an incredible crime fighting team brought together when the terminally-ill billionaire Wilton Knight saves the life of police officer Michael Long after Long gets shot in the face… When the billionaire helps out, providing Long with a new face and a new identity (Michael Knight), the young officer dedicates the remainder of his life to fighting injustice on behalf of the Foundation of Law and Government (FLAG). Singled out by Wilton Knight and aided by the staff of FLAG, Michael is teamed up with an extraordinary vehicle that, if necessary, is capable of fighting bad guys all by itself…

Knight Rider features David Hasselhoff in the role of Michael Knight, an ex-cop turned private crime fighter. But the true star of the show is Michael’s car, K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand), a sleek black Pontiac Trans-Am impervious to bullets, fire, or most any type of mayhem. Outfitted with state-of-the-art, top secret Artificial Intelligence, K.I.T.T. is not only capable of self-operation (with his mission to protect all human life), but he’s outfitted with smoke bombs, flamethrowers, infrared sensors, and countless other nifty gadgets. Able to verbally communicate with humans, K.I.T.T. maintains a special friendship with Michael, developing his own personality (which at times provides comic relief for the show). Just as criminal outlaws of the early-1980s feared the wrath of The A-Team, the prospect of a visit from Michael and K.I.T.T. certainly caused many sleepless nights for America’s criminal element…

The Knight Rider (Season 2) DVD features a number of action-packed episodes including the two part season premiere “Goliath” in which Michael and K.I.T.T. are forced to do battle with Wilton Knight’s ex-wife and son who enjoy the aid of a truck sporting many of the same capabilities as K.I.T.T… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “Blind Spot” in which Michael enlists the aid of a blind woman who is the only witness to a corrupt businessman’s illegal practices, and “Speed Demons” in which Michael and K.I.T.T. are on high alert when an anonymous tipster warns that the upcoming Foundation sponsored motorcycle race will play home to a murder…
