When one of us decides to pursue the study of Yoga, we find ourselves living and learning Yoga every day. On or off the mat, Yoga students can apply their practice to the many lessons life has to offer. The result of all this learning, and applying Yogic principles to life, is a major leap in self-improvement.

You can learn from your past, live the present moment in harmony, and plan your future, with an improved perspective of each. Past, present, and future are valuable, but each is important in a different way.

Let’s first address the past. Many people are “prisoners” to their past. When you look at past lessons, mistakes, and set-backs, each is as valuable as any form of higher education. This becomes life experience, and you should make the most of any form of education; otherwise you are wasting your life experiences, twice – first by learning them, and then later by regretting, blaming, and second guessing yourself. On top of this, you can create poor mental, physical, and spiritual health.

This is the exact opposite from what you are taught in a Yoga class. Yoga teaches you to unify these components of health, and this will enable you to improve your entire being. Put past worries, adversity, and pains behind you.

You can save them in a “mental file,” much like a valuable book. This teaches you not to repeat the same mistake twice. Remember that the past is filled with accomplishments, too. If you can read these words, you must be accomplishing quite a bit.

Be fair with yourself and try not to be so critical. Let go of guilt and forgive yourself for being human. If you start to sink into deep dark past regrets, practice pranayama; breath awareness is the key to bringing you into the present.

This is much similar to what you might do when holding an asana for an extended time during your Yoga practice. This will also allow you to focus on the most important time of all – the present moment.

The present is the time for action, and you must be proactive in order to succeed in life. Good reactions will save your life, but proactive behavior requires planning, innovation, vision, and perseverance. You must focus on the present to see opportunities which are right in front of you.

Life is filled with many obstacles and you have to be ready for the daily challenge. You cannot change the past, but you can change the present and future. Every successful person has faced criticism, failure, and self-doubt.

When you let negative thoughts into your heart and mind, you cannot think clearly. You cannot act now, and this affects your ability to plan for the future. How can you visualize success, if you are letting fear and self-doubt control your life?

Fill your mind with passion that motivates you to step forward and plan your future. When you meditate, take the time to visualize your success, achievements, and goals as vividly as possible. When you practice meditation and Yoga in this way, you will find yourself enjoying life, helping others, and on your path to success.

We purchase many products off-the-peg and don't require them to be tailor-made to match our needs. Nonetheless, when it comes to websites it seems to be different.

We purchase many products off-the-peg and don’t require them to be tailor-made to match our needs. Nonetheless, when it comes to websites it seems to be different. Many individuals expect that their site will be designed and developed to their rigorous specs. This is perfectly reasonable, and in a good deal of business plans it’s utterly necessary.

But wait – is it actually the best way to go about things for all cases? Take e-commerce websites as an example : these will possess many modules, with demanding security prerequisites, a control panel so the website proprietor can update the content on the site. All of this, while requiring the front-end to be painless to browse and purchase products for shoppers. Responding to all those demands is no petty undertaking, and if one thing goes wrong, you’re going back to the developer to request support. Custom-built websites in this light are burdened with so much to consider.

Nonetheless, there’s another choice to this way which is a lot more cost-effective, potentially gives you a lot more features, and provides more reliability, stability and security – web templates.

Individuals acknowledge these days that custom-made websites often aren’t essential and that in many cases, it’s best to alter your business plan even ever-so slightly so they fit a strong, proven web template than to take a chance with a custom website design to match your goals. So why is this the case though? Because of the demands a contemporary website asks for. You want a solid, tried and tested template that runs your site, not freshly written code that hasn’t been tested. Not only that, but templates commonly are updated often and these updates patched to your website, so your website is following all the present-day technologies presenting your Facebook status on your site.

Maybe most compellingly, website templates are much more money saving than tailor-made sites. Why would you spend £8000 on a website if you can obtain a ste with lots more facilities for just £100, as an example?

These reasons should make you consider carefully your online plans and whether to take a template or go for a custom website.

What’s the greatest threat facing our civilization? (No, it’s not the Islamic jihad.) It’s obesity. Due to its attendant health and economic costs, scientists predict that obesity alone will topple economic and social structures, induce a wide range of dire diseases, and drastically cut short Americans’ life spans.

These are more than another set of statistics — they predict things that can and will affect you, your family, your health, and your pocketbook. If you are among the two thirds of adult Americans struggling to escape escalating weight gain, (or even if you’re teetering on the edge with ten persistent pounds you can’t seem to lose), as a physician, I recommend that you take action to lose weight and protect your future health.

And I have good news for you. I’ve developed a simple plan to help you lose weight automatically based on a new scientific breakthrough.

Despite the abysmal failure of conventional medical approaches, this plan is different because it’s based on recent, groundbreaking scientific research, research that I predict will totally revolutionize weight loss and change the landscape of medicine as we know it.

Many of the answers to our weight and health problems are buried in thousands of research papers. With the aid of a number of very brilliant thinkers and scientists, I’ve gathered and synthesized the greatest advances in medical science over the last 20 years — advances that usually take decades to get incorporated into medical practice. Translated into a simple program that has brought easy, sustainable weight loss to thousands of people, you can access them today.

In the recent past, many pundits theorized that society-wide weight gain was due to our genes. In a sense, they were right, but genes only tell half the story. We share the same genes as our hunter- gatherer forebears who foraged in the woods and hunted wild game 20,000 years ago. What’s changed is the environment within which our genes operate.

Up until modern times, man’s natural environment supplied the foods we were genetically programmed to eat. But with the advent of industrialized agriculture and food production, we began eating mass-produced and processed foods that genetically program us to add pounds.

Here’s how:

Food is information — not just calories — and food information speaks to our genes, turning some genes ON and other genes OFF. That’s why it’s genes, not calories, that count.

Until recently, scientists believed that the critical mechanism for weight loss was caloric intake and expenditure — you eat little and exercise hard to lose each pound. But that’s hard to do and harder to maintain, recent scientific studies reveal (and no doubt not surprising to anyone who has tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to lose weight).

Using the caloric mechanism for weight loss is a bit like manually cranking a lever to open your garage door inch-by-inch and then having to hold the door open. Wouldn’t you rather push the button that activates the circuitry to open your garage door automatically?

To do that for weight loss, you have to access the master biological mechanisms controlling weight loss and weight gain. Using those mechanisms opens the door to automatic weight loss. The recent scientific discoveries I’ve assembled decode the instruction manual of our basic biology. At last, we can control the master mechanisms: our genes themselves.

The new genetic science (called Functional Medicine) teaches that our genes interact intimately with our environment. Every bite of food we eat, every thought we think, every stress we experience, or toxin we inhale carries a specific message to our genes, turning them on (or off), and telling them how to behave.

As a result, our genes are programmed moment-by-moment to actively create either weight loss or weight gain. Scientists have tracked exactly how all the different foods trigger the messages sent to your genes. With that knowledge, you can give your body the foods that work in your favor — and avoid ones that don’t.

For instance, for decades, people were warned to avoid fats at all costs, but now we know that the type of fat you eat is more important than the amount of fat you eat. The new science traces the biological impact of good fats, like the omega-3 fatty acids (contained in fish, fish oils, certain nuts and many other foods) and bad fats like the trans-fats contained in many processed foods.

What researchers found is that good fats turn on your body’s fat burning genes and bad fats turn off the fat burning genes. When you consume EPA or DHA, both omega-3 fatty acids, they access a metabolic gateway called the PPAR receptor, to activate genes that increase your metabolism, help you burn fat, and assist you in processing bodily glucose more effectively so that foods won’t get stored as fat.

It’s as if the EPA and DHA opens up an extra lane on your hormonal superhighway, making for a smooth and easy route towards slimness and health. That’s why, for automatic weight loss, I recommend adding EPA and DHA (both found in fish oil) to your diet, beginning today. On the other hand, unhealthy transfats (such as found in many processed and fast foods) act as a metabolic roadblock to weight loss, and if you eat them, you may find yourself crawling along at a snail’s pace, going nowhere.

These are just two of the hundreds of ways that you’ll learn to awaken the fat-burning code hidden in your DNA. In my new book, UltraMetabolism, due out in March, 2006, you’ll discover a wide range of foods that tell your genes to shed pounds, while learning to avoid the many other foods that tell your genes to pack on the pounds. Eating the foods right for your genes allows you to literally program your body to lose weight automatically, even as you sleep!

And that is the key: be simply learning to eat the foods that ignite your body’s fat burning engines, and avoiding the foods that snuff out these engines, you finally begin the process of working WITH your body, instead of against it — something that all fad diets fail to do, which is why they all fail in the long-run.

But, because UltraMetabolism teaches a simple plan to harness your body’s own powerful fat burning forces — ones that have evolved over millions of years — you are actually programming your body to lose weight, automatically.

Why struggle and suffer with ineffective diets when you can actually teach your body to be slim and healthy? With the simple two-step plan I’ve developed, you can program your body to lose weight automatically. In the first step, you eliminate all of the bad foods that slow your metabolism, make you feel lethargic and lead to disease; in the second step, you add the good foods that crank up your metabolism, boost your energy and revitalize your health.

Twenty-first century weight loss is easier than you’ve ever dreamed. And it’s something that I am confident about since I’ve treated over 2,000 patients, many of whom have experienced the very same automatic weight loss that I’ve described here.

My message to you is simple: If you want to fit into your jeans, you have to learn to fit into your genes!

Mark Hyman, M.D.

This is part 3 of the 4-part “Seven Keys to Permanent Weight Loss Success” series.

Key #4: Make it a lifestyle

You’ve heard this one so much you probably don’t even pay attention to it anymore. The idea of a lifestyle change has become a cliché. Sure, we all want to avoid the yo-yo diet plan and make something permanent, but few people really take the effort to learn how.

Are you one of those people dead-set in making a difference, so you strap on your shoes, load your refrigerator with nothing but chicken and broccoli, then put on your blinders and focus 110% for twelve weeks until you reach your goal?

What happens after that?

Most people celebrate. They eat a lot. They take a break from training.

A few weeks later, they are back to square one. Instead of feeling great, they talk about how great it felt. Instead of looking terrific, they tell old stories like grandfathers in rocking chairs, “I remember when I could see my shoes and not my belly when I’d look down at my feet.”

It’s great to have focus and to take on the challenge and really pursue it. But have you stopped to think about what happens after?

Are you training and dieting for a few weeks, or for life?

Let me ask you this … if it’s for life, can you imagine yourself eating the way you are eating from now until you are six feet under with a bouquet of flowers above your head? If not, it’s time to change.

You see, living healthy doesn’t have to be about diets and horrendous workouts. It can be about fun. I still recall the first time I set down the barbell and put on a pair of running shoes. Several people wrote me, horrified at the thought of how my muscles would wilt and wither from the rigors of training for a half marathon. How could I give up the admirable iron game for some lousy 13-mile run through the woods? What was I thinking?

The truth is, I’m beyond the need to compare my self-worth to the depth of my abdominal cuts or the girth of my biceps. I’m in this for life, and that means having fun. While I enjoy grabbing rusty dumbbells and slinging them around as I grunt, groan, and sweat like I’m taking an indoor shower, there’s more to life than weight-lifting. That’s why I like to ski, jog, and do other activities as well. I make it fun. And you know what? I can do fun. I don’t have to always have a workout sheet and a pen to stay in shape. Sometimes all I need is a good pair of shoes, two hours of free time, and the good green earth to make my rounds.

The same is true for nutrition. Live a little. Experiment with healthy recipes. Understand what “better bad choices” and “portion control” means. If I want some cheesecake, I might order a slice and split it with my wife and daughter. You’ll catch me eating a slice of pizza on occasion, and even sipping on a glass of red wine. The key is moderation. I don’t have to count the days until my diet is over because I’m focused on the process, not the end result. Learn to get out of the finish line and into the race. You’ll enjoy it more.

Key #5: Listen to your body

“Jeremy, I can’t finish my cardio workouts because I get dizzy and nauseous when I do them first thing in the morning, but I can’t eat food because they said I have to have an empty stomach to burn fat.”

“Jeremy, I know I need a ton of protein, but I just can’t seem to get it down. I get ill eating so much protein. How will I ever build muscle?”

These questions are common, because instead of listening to their body, many people are giving up their power by following the current trend or diet program. Your body has built-in mechanisms that can teach you a lot about what you are doing and if it is working. A healthy person knows when it is time to eat, because they get hungry. A healthy person also knows whether or not they require protein. These instincts are built in, but the S.A.D. diet (Standard American Diet) is so loaded with processed food that has no counterpart in nature, it’s no wonder the signal is getting lost.

What happens when you are next to a busy intersection with a constant buzz of cars going by? Eventually, you will tune out the noise. It becomes part of the background. If you are standing next to a deserted road, however, the occasional car whizzing by will attract your attention. You’ll be “in tune.”

The typical diet is so loaded with salt that it completely nullifies your sense of taste. When you try to eat something that is low salt or salt-free, it tastes bland and disgusting. You reach immediately for the salt shaker or at least grab a bottle of Mrs. Dash and cover it with herbs and spices.

Try going without added salt for just four weeks. This is an experiment I experienced first hand, as did my wife, and so do many of my clients. The first few weeks are not fun, because everything is so dull. Then, just like a smoker who has stopped sucking on smoke for a few weeks, something amazing happens. Slowly but surely, your taste will return. Suddenly, you become aware of the subtle flavors in vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, and other foods that just tasted like salt and seasoning before. It’s an amazing experience, if you let it happen.

By removing the additives, preservatives, refined sugars, processed grains, and other artificial components of your diet, you can start to sense your needs for protein and carbohydrates as well. I don’t follow the traditional “slab of meat at every meal” bodybuilder diet. I know it’s popular, but I choose to listen to my body.

I’ve force fed pounds of protein and the end result might be a little more muscle mass, but it also leaves me staring at a block of steak wishing I was somewhere else and hoping I never have to taste a bite of meat ever again. That’s not living … it’s dieting, and I’d rather live healthy than diet miserably. So, I stay in tune. If I crave protein, I eat it. If not, I might just have a vegetarian dish. I listen to my body.

If you have the most energy on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, go for it. If you’re one of those who feels dizzy and weak, then listen to your body. Stop worrying about what “they” say about an empty stomach. Instead, get some food, let it digest, and then get to work. Whatever fat-burning benefit you might have from training on empty will be negated by your lack of energy. Add some fuel and then push down on the accelerator and go full throttle. In the end, it’s calories that are king, not whether or not you time the meal before or after your workout.

If you thrive on high protein and lower carbohydrates, that’s great. Personally, I get extremely irritable when I reduce my carbohydrates and get sick of eating protein when I raise my protein intake. So instead of giving up my power to the almighty diet, I listen to my body. I figure it knows what it wants. Of course, the trend is that you have to cut carbohydrates to lean down, so I made certain I lost 35 pounds and cut down to 7% body fat while eating 300 grams of carbohydrates and 90 grams of protein per day to prove that, first, you can lose fat even with carbohydrates in your system, and second, it doesn’t take pounds of meat and tubs of protein powder to maintain a muscular physique. The proof is in the pudding – you can see my menus and my progress here:

Bottom line, get comfortable with you. Stop ignoring your body. Listen to it. If you find that your “splurge meals” are making you sick, think about the message your body is giving you and decide if you are going to continue it week after week, or if it’s time to take off the training wheels and grow up. You don’t have to have pizza every week to enjoy life.

(Continued in Part 4)

Individuals who require an internal artificial pacemaker to regulate their heartbeat will need to undergo pacemaker surgery to have the device implanted in the body. The procedure is performed under local anesthetic, though patients are generally hospitalized overnight for careful monitoring. Patients are given a mild sedative to keep them calm and relaxed but are otherwise awake and alert throughout the procedure.

To insert the pacemaker, the surgeon makes a two to three inch incision just below the patient’s collarbone. An electrode lead is inserted into a nearby vein and slowly advanced towards the heart. A fluoroscope is used to guide the doctor as he advances the lead, providing him with a detailed image of the interior of the vein. Once the lead enters into the heart, it is attached to the tissue so that the positioning of the lead may be tested. To test positioning, the surgeon sends small electrical signals down the lead and evaluates the heart’s response to the impulses. A suitable position is one that allows the full strength of the signal to reach the heart, thereby signaling the heart to contract and beat. It may be necessary to reseat the lead within the vein several times before an ideal position is achieved.

Once the lead has been placed and secured in the heart, the generator portion of the pacemaker is implanted under the skin. This small box, measuring just a half an inch long by a half an inch wide, is connected to the electrode lead and inserted though the incision into a small pocket just under the skin. The doctor then sutures the incision closed and hooks the patient up to a heart monitor for observation. The whole procedure, from start to finish, typically takes just one to two hours.

Patients should expect to feel mild to moderate pain and tenderness around the incision for several days. Since the generator lies just beneath the surface of the skin, most individuals can clearly feel the outline of the pacemaker once the incision site has healed. Some patients end up with mild scarring or a small deformity of the skin near the generator, due to the fact that it is not seated deep within the body. More serious complications are rare (occurring in just 1-2% of patients) and may include severe bleeding, blood clots, puncturing of the heart or lung, heart attack, stroke, or a pacemaker malfunction.

Since pacemaker batteries run from five to ten years, it is necessary to replace the generator every few years to ensure that it is running properly. Routine monitoring of the pacemaker ensures that is it operating as designed until such time that a replacement is needed.

If you appreciate a strong, healthy self confidence that carries you through overwhelming times and drives you to achieving your most far reaching goals, martial arts is for you.

A person’s self-confidence is like a muscle, it needs to be exercised in order to grow and develop. In the 20 plus years that I’ve been teaching Martial Arts in our community we have developed a 5 step approach to building self-confidence. These 5 steps can be learned by anyone – with the right guidance:

1.	Correct Body Posture. The importance of the correct body posture is paramount. We all send hidden, sub-conscious messages with our body language and the way we carry ourselves. Carry yourself with pride, confidence and security. Carry yourself like a successful person and your confidence will show.

2.	Proper Eye Contact. Making proper eye contact when speaking to others has a huge effect on the conversation. Have you ever been talking to somebody and instantly felt connected? Like you’ve known this person forever? Chances are, they understand the importance of body language, and proper eye-contact.

3.	Goal Setting. Goal setting is talked about by everybody, and most people understand the importance of this process. Then why do most people miss their mark? Because they don’t have the discipline and confidence to see the goal through. Our process teaches you the right way to set goals and actually achieve them!

4.	Communication. Inspiring those around you is critical to getting what you want. Whether they are your children, co-workers, employees or boss, good leaders are inspirational. We teach this inspirational formula.

5.	Mentors. All of the skills above, a healthy body and mind combined with a good mentor or two will make all the difference in the world for your happiness and success.

If you are interested in learning more about how martial arts can help your self confidence, please contact one of my three locations in Bellevue, Lynnwood or Kent, Washington at 800-508-6141or martialadvice@hotmail.com to set up a free 2 week trail orientation.

The best workout routine is actually no routine at all… But the deliberate and conscious randomization and variation of training methods, stresses and intensities.

Most people are looking for the best workout routine… they want something they can do over and over again and get predictable results.

They saw what worked for so-and-so… and they want to be just like that.

Some famous person says they use the best workout routine… so it must actually be the best.

Right?

Sorry to be the one to break it to you… But there is no “One Size Fits All Absolute Best Workout Routine”.

What works well for one person may not work at all for another… and what works well for you now will not continue to work well forever.

So does that mean we should just give up looking for an effective strength, conditioning and fitness program?… ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Just because the absolute best workout routine turned out to be a non-existent fable does not mean you should give up on the possibility of finding a successful workout program.

Nolan Ryan said… “Enjoying success requires the ability too adapt. You shouldn’t outline a program and etch it in stone. We all have different physical limitations and skills that make us unique individuals. Try to make modifications in your program to enhance it. Only by being open to change will you have a true opportunity to get the most from your talent.”

Basically, the trick is to look for a program that is effective in getting results, interesting to hold your attention, modifiable to your goals, needs, abilities and limitations and sustainable over time.

The answer to the frustrating no best workout routine dilemma is… No workout routine at all.

When we were children we would run, jump and play… and our physical fitness reflected this participation in random physical activity.

As we get older, we stop running, jumping and playing and search for the best workout routine to provide us with all the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Gyms, personal trainers and fitness experts all claim to have the best workout routine.

And some do… For them, at that particular moment in time.

But that does not mean they have uncovered the best workout routine for everyone.

My advice…

Look at strength, conditioning and fitness as a personal journey… and not a destination.

Stop looking for the best workout routine and start physically training.

Learn what works best for you, fortify your strengths and turn your weaknesses into newfound strengths.

Experiment, get out of mind-numbing routine and above all else… have fun.

I am sure that you will find that the physical and mental benefits of the deliberate and conscious randomization and variation of training methods, stresses and intensities will greatly outweigh any benefits gained from any so-called best workout routine.

The best workout routine… No routine at all.

A home gym can help you build muscle, produce an attractive body, rev up a sluggish metabolism and shave years off your age.

If you choose wisely, you’ll have all the tools you need to accomplish these goals (and more). But not everyone knows where to start or how to get the most from a home gym.

When clients ask me about buying home gym equipment, here are 5 things I tell them to get the most from their purchase:

1) Buy a well rounded piece of equipment:

Unless you have hundreds of square feet in your home to dedicate to multiple pieces of equipment, you should look for a home gym that covers all the major exercises (including the ones you don’t like), such as chest, back, legs (hamstrings & quadriceps), shoulders, biceps and triceps.

2) Make sure your home gym is stable:

There’s a saying, ‘You get what you pay for.’ Most of the inexpensive home gyms you buy from a local department store have very narrow bases, so they tend to rock a bit. Stay away from home gyms that do not have a good stable base.

For a basic rule of thumb, look at home gyms that are more ’square’ or ‘as high as they are wide’. As an example, you won’t want a home gym that 10ft high x 2 ft wide x 2 ft deep, unless you are going to anchor it to a concrete floor.

3) Put your home gym in a place you will use it:

If you leave your home gym in a room you normally don’t go into to, odds are high that you aren’t going to use it. The more inviting the room where you place your equipment, the more likely you will use it (how many of us really want to work out in a dungeon?).

If there’s only one place you can place your home gym, then work on the room. Maybe add a coat of paint or put up pictures that inspire you. Add a stereo system or a wall mounted television. By making the room inviting and inspiring, you’ll ensure that workouts will be enjoyable.

4) Make a simple & short workout routine:

Don’t go making or using ‘Mr. Or Ms. Olympia’ home gym workouts. That’s the first big mistake that people make when they first get their equipment. Instead, start by making a workout that is only 30 to 45 minutes long. That’s less than a 1 hour TV show.

Do this workout 3 to 5 days a week. Remember to work all your muscles (not just the ones you like) for optimum results. It helps to keep a record of your workouts on paper so you can see just how far you’ve come.

If you’re stuck on what to do, don’t worry. Many home gyms come with beginner workouts. But again, don’t go all out and kill yourself the first few workouts – start from where you are and build on it. Consistency is key for a killer body.

5) Write your workout days on the calendar:

Like any important appointment, make an appointment with your home gym. You need to make the effort to put yourself, your body and your health first – especially at the beginning stages. Experts tell us it takes 3 to 6 weeks before actions become habit. Once you’ve built the habit of working out, it will get easier.

To help you stick to your exercise appointment, get loved ones to encourage you and make you accountable. Once you get past the 8-week mark, you’ll feel (and look) so great you’ll wonder why you didn’t get a home gym sooner.

So those are 5 ways to get the most out of your home gym equipment. If you want to know which home gyms are my picks for ‘Best Buy’ check out:

People often shy away from Refurbished Fitness equipment, but generally this is only because they aren’t familiar with the term refurbished. In today’s world saving money is important. If you can cut costs without sacrificing value is the aim of the game. No matter if you’re a seasoned deal hunter or just out trying find a bargain, a piece of refurbished fitness equipment may be just what you’re looking for shape up your body and your bank account.

Most times when someone hears the word refurbished they think something is wrong with the item, or it’s defective. How ever nothing could be further from the actual meaning of the word. Refurbished could mean that an item has been damaged but it also holds several other meanings as well. Refurbished fitness equipment could be customer a customer return. Most equipment stores do offer some sort of return/refund policy on most items in their store. Most cases when an item is returned the store will return the unit to the manufacturer for inspection, and repackaging, however the item can no longer be deemed as new. The manufacturer would then redistribute the equipment as refurbished fitness equipment. This same situation is what would occur if an item were damaged during shipping. There’s a good chance that nothing is wrong with the unit, but the retailer or customer decides that they do not want anything damaged in shipment. Because the item is no longer brand new, it could never again be sold as such. But, if there were problems corrected by the manufacturer, the unit then becomes refurbished.

It’s possible that an item labeled as refurbished fitness equipment could have some simple cosmetic damage, possibly a dent or scratch, or possibly a more serious cosmetic defect. However cosmetic damage doesn’t mean that there is a serious problem with the functioning of the equipment, but it is no longer brand new. Hence if the manufacturer inspected it, it’s now considered refurbished.

If a piece of fitness equipment is on demo or display at a store, often it’s replaced by a new unit and the demo is removed from the sales floor. Generally these demo pieces are sent back to the manufacturer for inspection. The reason for an inspection to take place is to ensure there are no damages or defects, most often the item is repackaged and sent back to a retailer dealing in refurbished fitness equipment. In a situation like this the only thing separating a brand new item and the refurbished unit is the fact that one was on display.

Other refurbished classifications may involve a box that was simply opened by mistake, directions that are missing or overstock of a particular item. The bottom line is that, whenever a product is returned to the manufacturer for any reason, it is then inspected. If repairs are needed, the manufacturer takes care of those repairs before repackaging the item. If it’s a simple case of missing directions, they are replaced. The product is then shipped and resold as refurbished fitness equipment.

Other reasons for product being deemed refurbished could be an open box model, or a unit missing directions. When a product is returned to the manufacturer and they are required to inspect it or make some repairs before it is re-saleable the unit becomes refurbished. It could be as simple as missing directions, or a repair to a part of the item. The fact is that the original manufacturer makes the repairs, and then ships them out to be resold.

When purchasing refurbished equipment it’s important that you’re familiar with the stores refund and warranty policy. If there isn’t one it may not be the best idea to make your purchase there. When possibly ask your sales person if they know why the item is refurbished, and what the original problem may have been.

Before starting any fitness routine, you should consult with your family doctor or a licensed physician to learn what risks, if any, exist.

Tai Chi for Over Fifties Tai Chi is an internal martial art
which can be soft and gentle. It can and should be practised in
a flowing way for practitioners of any age. Particlularly, in
China and the est nowadays, people ove r 50 are taking up tai
chi whilst the younger generation in china are not so interested
in such a traditional art! Tai chi has been proven by the 3000
years of Chinese experience and recent medical studies into te
benefits of qigong [tai chi is acomplete qigong] to be
beneficial to the health of the individual practioner. Complete
recovery of from diseases from cancer to colds has been
documented through diligent pratice of tai chi. Tai chi can also
be used to control arthritis. It is recommended that you learn
under a highly experienced instructor, who has over 10 years of
experience and has learned in China or from a well-recognized
master with verificable “lineage”. This is because you want to
be learning the real thing and benefitting by clearer mind,
healthier body and gradual recovery from any health challeneges
you may have experienced or be experienceing. Tai chi chuan
means “supreme ultimate fist”. What does “supreme ultimate” mean
to you? Tai chi is really about the cultivation of mind, body,
spirit and also to kinds of energy, which we don’t have a proper
concept of in the West. Those are internal energy, or chi which
is present in the body from birth and we also get it from air
and food. External energy is the energy that is in the universe.
We learn to build up the chi in our bodies in tai chi and that
helps us to improve our health. This is the medical aspect of
tai chi. We learn to utilize the external energy in tai chi
which is the martial aspect of the martial art of tai chi. Tai
chi is said to have been invented approximately 5000 years ago,
legend has it either by a Taoist priest named Chang Seng Feng or
passed to the ancient Chinese people by a group of people
reputed to have been 7ft tall and these people – “the sons of
reflected light” are said to have taught the arts to the chinese
which has made their civilisation so advanced since as long as
3000 year ago as documented by discoveries of the porcelain and
silk items in archaeology. Chang Seng Feng is reported to have
witnessed a fight between a crane and a snake and noticed the
yielding and striking qualities of these animals and designed
tai chi based on observations of nature. Tai chi is thus
performed slowly and changingly, “flowing like a river” to
promote longevity and health. does the tortoise or the elephant
move quickly and fast? And how long do these creratures live
for? Is it not possible then that we should slow down in our
lives and relax like these long-living creature to improve our
own chances of living long lives? We imitate the movements of
many animals in the tai chi form – a sequence of movements or
postures which flow into each other. These stretching and
strengthening exercises have very poetic names, beautiful such
as White Crane Spreads Its Wings, Golden cock Stands On one Leg
and Fair Lady Weaves The Shuttles. Tai chi is a healthy exercise
which improves circulation. The author used to be a medical
student at Sheffield university and notes that Tai chi was used
in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to aid recovery for heart
attack patients. Tai chi incorporates breathing and movement as
well as internal assage of the body’s organs and stretching of
muscles, tendons and ligaments. Keeping a clear mind is
important and whilst the exercise is anaerobic, i.e. not
strenuous, the body feel invigorated after proper practice and
one can feel energy circulating in the body after practice -so
don’t overdo it. The key is consistent daily practice and taking
responsibility for your health 100% Sam Beatson runs
