Entertainment Industry Up in Arms against Online Piracy

Concerned authorities from the world of film, music and television have united to request the European Union (EU) to take stringent measures against illegal downloading of files on the internet.
The entertainment industry is suffering significant losses due to internet piracy, and therefore, authorities from the industry have decided to make the best use of the opportunity presented by the Digital Economy Bill and its recommendations. With the introduction of the Bill, stringent measures against internet piracy have become necessary.
A committee formed by these interested parties, called the ‘European Audiovisual Social Dialogue Committee’, is advocating positive changes in EU legislations so that persistent offenders can be penalized.
The Committee recently issued a statement in which it said that the EU cannot afford to ignore acts of illegal file-sharing. According to the statement, the Internal Markets Commissioner should see that the required infrastructure is present in all the member states so that these states can formulate better laws to prevent copyright infringement. The Commissioner should also see that peer-to-peer file-sharing and similar acts of copyright violation are checked by internet service providers (ISPs).
